Three convicted women were members of a punk band, which hailed impromptu performances from October 2011 to February 2012 in different public places, including Red Square.Their most notorious and controversial act was when they climbed the altar of Moscow's biggest cathedral. In the altar, they performed a "punk prayer" entitled "Virgin Mary, Redeem Us of Putin".
Other members of the Pussy Riot were still at large with some being arrested and tried. Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30 were already in prison. But Samutsevich was given a suspended sentence and was released last Wednesday. Alyokhina would be spending a two-year prison term.
The performance near the altar was considered tolerable in Russia but their demonstration protest against Putin added problem to their sentence.
