Premature Birth Worst in Nevada
According to News 4 KRNV Reno, the March of Dimes named Nevada as the worst in protecting the beginning of life. The state has the highest number of premature births and deaths among other states across the country.
"I think problems of the beginning of life are most important," said Iain Buxton, professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in response to the 'D' grade given by March of Dimes.
In the same manner, the grade entails the low level of healthy living in the state. According to Buxton, the state is doing its best in preventing death, but they don't have enough program to protect and safeguard a healthy life.
"Our rate is 13.2 percent, which means about one in every seven babies are being born too soon," March of Dimes spokesperson, Michelle Gorelow said.
Gorelow noted the high number of premature babies staying in the intensive care units of hospital which is costly and may not be healthy to the baby.
"The average NICU stay is $3,000 - $5,000 per day. That doesn't include potential long-term health problems like breathing issues and cognitive impairments."
However, Gorelow has been optimistic of the programs the state is undertaking for the welfare of babies. "Though we're still at a "D" grade, I'm still very optimistic that we're going in the right direction. That we will reach our 9.6 percent goal."
Prenatal is very important to secure the health of babies and lower incidence of premature birth. "A lot of it is preventable and that's what the prenatal care is all about," said Registered Nurse Darrella McGuire.
"It's imperative because our babies our future depends on it."
