The South Korean defense officials confirmed that North Korea fired four short-range missiles into the eastern waters last Thursday. The Seoul government suspected that this was an act of protect against the ongoing military exercises of US and South Korea, which Pyongyang called as an act of invasion.

However, analysts said that the missile exercise would not escalate the problem with South Korea as the North tried to win investments. If North Korea want to regain its investment and aid, it must create a good foreign image.

Meanwhile, officials in Washington assured that they are closely monitoring the conditions in the Korean Peninsula. This month, North Korea allowed its citizens to meet up with their relatives in the border. This is the first in three years after the escalation of the conflict between the Korean nations.

Last Thursday, South Korea pleaded for the release of a Christian South Korean missionary detained by North Korea for allegedly establishing an underground Christian church in the hermit state.

The conflict in the Korean peninsula started in 1950-1953 Korean War. The war did not end with a peace treaty, but with an armistice.
