Anderson Cooper: Ukrane is like World War II
Reporting from Ukraine at Kiev, Anderson Cooper likened the tension to World War II. Cooper noted that there bottles of Molotov everywhere with barricades of steel, wires, and almost anything used by protesters for their camping out. With massive fog and smoke covering the city, it seemed that the entire place was being bombarded every now and then.
With the uprising of the people and the fall of their former prime minister who was a pro-Russian, Ukranians are more likely to elect a not-so-pro Russian leader. And this is what Russia is trying to avoid.
Russia, with their military base in Crimea, marched to Ukraine to take over power from the newly installed interim government. Over the past weeks, Ukraine had been plagued by the civil uprising, and now the country is mired again into a deep political confrontation as Ukranian soldiers take their stand against the Russian takeover or invasion.
In this situation, the worst would be a confrontation leading to violence, which would fire up a war. Just last week, the United States of America condemned Russia's actions of taking over Ukraine with their intensified military actions and readiness in Crimea.
While Russia is looking for ways to continue its strength in Crimea, Ukranians are trying to regain the base and drive out Russia. While Putin had said that violence is the last resort they are considering, the situation may escalate to worse conditions as they stand nose to nose with each other.
